Teacher cover letter template

A cover letter for teaching jobs that schools actually read: your subject and grade levels, results your students achieved, how you run a classroom and support every learner, and what you would add to this school.

Templates

  • Teacher cover letter (document): A cover letter for teaching jobs that shows your subject, classroom results, teaching approach and how you support every student. Sample content included.
  • Cover letter (document): A friendly, focused cover letter that connects your experience to the role in four short paragraphs.

How to use these templates

  1. Open the teacher cover letter and paste the vacancy advert or job description.
  2. Tell the AI your subject, the ages you teach, your certification and one result, such as improved test scores or a programme you started.
  3. Add something from the school's own website: its mission, a specialism or a club you could run.
  4. Download as Word or PDF, and offer to teach a demonstration lesson in the closing paragraph.

What schools look for in a teacher cover letter

  • Name your licence or qualification near the top: state certification in the US, QTS in England, or a B.Ed with CTET or TET in India.
  • Give one measured result from your classroom, such as pass rates, reading levels or progress scores. Head teachers see far more claims than evidence.
  • Explain how you adapt lessons for students with special educational needs, English language learners or advanced students.
  • For UK schools, mention your commitment to safeguarding; it is part of every job description there.
  • Say what you would do beyond lessons: a club, a team, mentoring trainee teachers or leading a subject area.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a teacher cover letter be?

One page. In England, some schools ask for a longer supporting statement on their application form instead; follow the advert.

Can a new teacher use this template?

Yes. Replace classroom results with your student teaching or placement: the classes you taught, a unit you planned and feedback from your mentor teacher.

Should I address the principal or the hiring committee?

Address the person named in the advert, usually the principal or head teacher. If none is named, "Dear Hiring Committee" works.
